In early 2007, John Havens and Jason Van Orden, two respected podcasting gurus, jumped on the PodCamp "unconference" bandwagon and PodCamp NYC was formed. The "unconference" focused on broadcast content, media and the many facets of distributing content online. Vigor, a supporter and key sponsor of the event ongoing, was to develop a unique logo that signified New York City's PodCamp and the spirit for which it was organized.
Vigor did extensive research on identifiable landmarks of New York City. This was an easy task, but finding a mark that wasn't blatant or expected proved more daunting. Collaboratively the team decided on using the upper arm of the Statue of Liberty as the defining imagery of broadcast, RSS/XML fed media. The torch was a natural fit for the existing flame imagery used in the PodCamp logo.
Vigor designed a woodcut inspired mark accompanied with a hand drawn type treatment as a nod to the grassroots and guerilla nature of the event. The use of warm colors was a natural progression from the standard orange of RSS feeds.
The PodCampNYC 2.0 logo was developed with New York City's Brooklyn Bridge as the graphical element in the brand mark. The event is being held in Brooklyn, given, and the two openings in the bridge symbolize "2.0,"it was an easy decision to visually reinforce relevance and memorability through the mark.
Once the logo was approved, Vigor worked with the team and the Confabb team to integrate the look into PodCampNYC 2.0 web site.
PodCampNYC was a large success attracting hordes of new media and press gurus. It set the stage for PodCampNYC 2.0 scheduled for February 28th, 2008 for which we also created the logo. We expect this particular logo will develop a life of its own year after year which will force Vigor to continually find new ways to iterate the meaning while maintaining the look and spirit of the family of logos.
